Let kids make their own school lunches

Children can help plan and select their own lunches. With nutritional guidance, their noon meal will be much more beneficial.

School lunches. Here we go again!

I have a friend who said he ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every day for lunch when he was in elementary school. To me that sounds terribly boring, but if he liked it and ate it, then great! It suited him.

It makes sense to fix the kids something they actually like and that they will actually eat. As a teacher I've seen some beautifully prepared meals tossed in the trash. Ever wonder why your kids are so famished when they get home? Ask them exactly what they ate of their lunch. You might be surprised.

  • Engage them in writing their own menus.
  • Discuss the nutritional value of their choices, and set some guidelines.
  • Let them make the shopping list.
  • Take them to the market with you to choose the food.
  • Help them make the lunch the night before.
  • After school inquire as to how they liked the lunch and how much of it they ate. There should be a commitment on the child's part to eat what he takes.
Good luck in this new school year. Lunch should be a time of relaxation and nourishment. (A note of support from Mom or Dad is a nice surprise once in a while too.)

Parents: Don't Forget to Personalize the kids' School 'Stuff'

Lost and found becomes a mysterious 'black hole' in most schools: things go in but never come out. Don't let that happen to your kids' stuff.

This is just a reminder, in case you have forgotten: write your kids' names on all their possessions.

  • If you haven't already, get out the Sharpie and write names in jackets, coats, sweaters, sweatshirts, and any other removable garment that your child could leave somewhere on the school campus. (That's assuming you don't have time to sew in name tags.)
  • Be sure to personalize backpacks and lunch pails too.  Sometimes there are several just alike in one classroom. If lunch sacks are carried, then have your children write their names on them every day.
  •  Don't wait until things start disappearing, do it now.

Stress to the kids that they should tell you as soon as something is missing.  That way you can notify the school immediately.  If you wait for a week or two the chances of getting the item back in good shape get slimmer.

You may need to go to the school and visit the lost and found box yourself, especially for your very young children. I'm always amazed at the clothing that is never claimed and is ultimately given to charity.

Good luck keeping up with those things you have so lovingly provided for your kids.  I'll  hope with you that they learn to be responsible this year and don't lose a thing !
