Big Sister, Baby Brother

When a new baby is in the house there are many adjustments for everyone.  The usual peace and quiet come to a screeching halt as the newest member of the family exercises his right to be heard . . . at the top of his lungs!

Everyone tells the older sister that in time the baby will not cry so much, or sleep so much, but that he will be crawling and walking and even running after her some day.  It is hard for her to visualize him beyond what he is at the moment, but she finds him fascinating.

"Was I ever this small, Mommy?" She may ask.  "Did I ever make so much noise?"

The answers can be quickly supplied by pulling out the photographs and the videos of her when she was at that age.  She may have a new awareness of her own growth and development.  It may give her new perspective of herself in relation to the baby.

The parents and grandparents will need to remember that even though she seems grown up in comparison to the baby, she really isn't very old.  She still needs all the reassurance and tender loving care that she did before the baby was born.

I'm sure the two of them will have many happy moments as they grow up, and a maybe a few rough ones. From the look on her face, I think she is up to the task of being a terrific big sister to the roughest and toughest of little brothers.  From the look on his face, I think he'll give her a run for her money.

Best wishes to both of them, and to all the big sisters and little brothers in your family!
