When growing up, many of us at some point in our lives were bullied, or knew others that were being bullied. I grew up in a small town in Iowa, where only a few African American families lived. My sisters and I were called names all the time, because of the color of our skin. We were also teased, because we did not have the prettiest dresses to wear, simply because my parents could not afford to buy nice clothes for us. I remember how this made me feel and hate the thought that other children are experiencing these feelings, 60 years later.

Now even today, we would never consider ourselves capable of being a bully, or would we? Anyone can be a bully when they are not careful about what they say, and how they say things to others. Words can be cruel and they can hurt.  Our body language and the tone of our voice are indicators of our attitude and feelings.

Think of how you would react if someone showed you a picture of their artistic drawing.   If you said, "You drew that!" expressing pleasure with both your vocal and facial expressions, the artist would come away with a sense of accomplishment.   On the other hand, if you said, "You drew that?" demonstrating both ridicule and disgust with your tone of voice and your facial expression, the artist would come away feeling defeat. When someone is being bullied they are made to feel defeat.  Let's teach this next generation of children that we must be careful how we express our thoughts to others.

In the picture book & CD That's Bingzy! Busy Building Self-Esteem, Bingzy says, "My strength comes from deep inside.  In storms I never let it hide."  Bullying creates a stormy situation.  Bingzy wants children to be strong and refuse to give a bully power over you.
