Congress, We Want Safe Toys, Get the Lead Out!
By The Schoolmarm • Jul 31st, 2008 • Category: articlesA ban on tainted toys? About time!
We’ve written before about safe toys. It has become a major search for parents to find toys and children’s products that are deemed safe for the health of their little ones. Now, if the congress can agree, we should see change for the better.
Washington reports that the House overwhelmingly voted to ban lead and other dangerous chemicals from items such as jewelry and rubber ducks that could end up in kids’ mouths.
The new legislation would give more power to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which many criticized for its handling (or not handling) of the dangerous products from China.
With this bill, toys will be tested in the laboratory before they get to the marketplace. As the kids might say, DUH! Shouldn’t that have always been the case? Oh well, better late than never. Some products would even require a third party testing before they are marketed.
This bill is intended to impose the toughest lead standards in the world, banning lead beyond minute levels in products for children 12 and younger.
It goes to the Senate for approval, so this is your time to speak up and encourage your senators to pass the bill.
Being proactive for our kids,
