Emergency Planning With Your Kids

Children can't help but be disturbed when they hear news of hurricanes in Florida, tornadoes in Wisconsin, floods in Louisiana or fires and earthquakes in California. Here are some things you can do to reassure your children once they become aware of natural disasters.
First: Have a family plan of evacuation and reunion. Review your plan on a regular basis so everyone is familiar with it.
Second: Gather and store emergency supplies. (A new trash container on wheels is handy for storage) Have water stored for emergency use and watch the expiration date. Use them before they expire and replenish.
Third: Make sure you know where your gas turn off is and that you have the wrench available to turn it. ( don't turn it off unless you think there is a leak, getting it turned back on may take a while.)
Fourth: Be diligent in keeping the school informed with your most current cell phone number and other pertinent information including who will pick up your kids if you can't.
Fifth: Discuss emergency/disasters calmly with your children. If you are riddled with anxiety, that will speak louder than your words. Reassure them that you are doing all you can to be prepared and that you will be there for them.
I have an emergency kit in my car and in my home. One item I have in each is a solar powered radio. With the solar energy or hand crank, I know I can get information when I need it. They are set to KNX, my radio choice for news in time of disaster. You might consider getting a similar one for your home and car.
Staying prepared with you,
