Goal Setting For Kids
By The Schoolmarm • Dec 31st, 2008 • Category: familyDo you think children should set their own goals for the new year?
Your answer may depend on how well you have been able to keep your own resolutions of the past. If you succeeded then you may be more inclined to pass that tradition on to your children. If you haven’t made it past February on your most desired goal, then you are probably less inclined.
We traditionally tie in resolutions to new beginnings and a fresh start at doing things the right way. This year might be a good time to help your children think along those lines.
Here are my suggestions for guiding them in their resolutions building.
- 1. Keep the number of resolutions appropriate to the child’s age.
- 2. Involve the child in what he or she needs to start, or change, or improve, etc.
- 3. Modify the resolutions to the child’s ability level.
- 4. Word them in simple terms that are clear and understandable.
- 5. Make the resolutions reasonable and attainable.
- 6. Write and post them in the child’s room.
- 7. Make setting the goals a rewarding activity.
- 8. Review the goals frequently with the child but don’t use them in an accusing or punishing way.
- 9. Accept that it is a process and not an overnight change.
- 10. Remember how hard it is for you to keep your own resolutions.
Set some goals for the whole family too. It might be the start of something very positive for 2009. I certainly hope so.

Happy New Year Schoolmarm. I liked your dancer. I think she is ready to start off 2009. I liked the goal setting ideas.
That reminds me, I need to set some goals this year too.
Thanks for all your hard work.
