From the tree in the backyard that loses its leaves, to the light-weight sweaters being tugged on, we feel the subtle reminders that we are entering a new phase of the year.   We wistfully say, "Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn."

It isn't easy to let go of those lazy days of summer, especially when you're a kid. For some, just the thought of facing shorter days and colder mornings is down right depressing. Most of us love those long days where daylight stretches slowly into the evening.

But the winter months have their own appeal. As we say goodbye to one season and hello to the next, it is like taking a deep breath, a fresh new beginning. In some parts of the country moms will drag out the stored boots and parkas. In Southern California we'll pull out the fleecy sweatshirts and jackets.

Some children, as well as adults, may feel the light deficiency and suffer from mood swings. They may feel overwhelmed as they get deeper into the demands of a new school year.  September to June may seem forever in the eyes of a child.

If your kids are feeling a little on the low side, saying goodbye to their favorite time of year, help them remember what the next few months have to offer. Get out the calendar and talk about the special days and holidays ahead: halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, presidents' birthdays, valentines day and Easter. Talk about some of your plans for the year. Hopefully that will perk them up and redirect them to a more positive outlook. The more optimistic you are, the more they will be.

Here's to a great school year, with a reminder to you parents to enjoy every season of the year, as well as every season of your child's life.
