Homework: 10 Questions to Ask Yourself
By The Schoolmarm • Oct 5th, 2008 • Category: parenting"I hate homework!" "Why do teachers give so much?" "I'm too tired for homework tonight!"
Such groans can be heard across the nation, ( and that's just from the parents.)
In some homes homework is a nightly ordeal and parents become frustrated when the children either can't do it or stubbornly resist doing the work. What the teacher expects will take 45 minutes sometimes takes hours to complete.
If that is true at your home, then evaluate the situation, ask yourself some questions:
- Do you provide a study area free from visual and auditory distractions?
- Do the children understand the assignments before they begin?
- Do they have all the supplies needed to do the task?
- Do you hover, or insist they work as independently as possible?
- Do you check their progress after a few minutes?
- Do you give constructive help and praise?
- Do they start homework early enough? Is after dinner too late?
- Do you have someone who could help them earlier in the day if you can't?
- Do you notice what specific areas they are having problems with?
- Do you encourage a positive attitude in their studies?
Explain to your kids that homework is an extension of the school day and that they can determine how long their school day is: either by 'fooling around' and taking all evening, or doing it as quickly and accurately as they can. Hopefully they will choose to shorten the day for all of you.
