Kids 'dig' Clay
By The Schoolmarm • Dec 17th, 2007 • Category: activities for kidsWhen I was a child I used to dig (with a spoon), in a particular dirt bank near my home. It was wonderful to smell the clean red clay as it was extracted. It felt cool and moist in my hands, and I couldn't wait to start molding it into little objects.
Today there is a wide range of colorful modeling clays for children. You can buy models, molds, tools and cutters for dozens of designs, animals, holidays, etc. There are how-to books and guides for non-drying clay to permanent clay that can be baked in a kiln.
Playing with clay is a great release of tension. I have often handed a child a block of clay and allowed him or her to work out anger or frustration. It is also good for developing fine motor skills: rolling, pinching, patting, and did I mention it is also fun?
I suggest having an oilcloth for the table and/or cheap plastic place mats for each child. If used exclusively for "clay time" it will help with clean up. Keep all the clay related items in a plastic bin and it is ready for use. Terrific for a rainy day activity.
If you are like me, you could use a little clay time yourself, so dig in and have fun with your kids.
