Take a moment and try to remember the joy you felt when you opened that beautifully wrapped gift.  Maybe it was a sweater, a game, or your favorite CD that made you feel special.  Well, you can get that same special feeling when you give a gift to someone else.  Let's teach our kids at an early age about giving to others.

Opportunities for giving are everywhere.  We can give to others by volunteering our services.  When you cook your dinner how about making an extra plate for that elderly neighbor who is in need of assistance.  Take your son or daughter along with you when you deliver the plate so they can experience the joy of giving.  When you go grocery shopping let your child help pick out a special treat to give to a friend who has just come home from the hospital.  Encourage your child to make a telephone call to a family member in need of companionship.   How about letting him or her decide on a toy to give to a needy family?  Acts of kindness help us become less selfish and all around better human beings.

Bingzy says to give someone a smile or a pat on the back.  A smile, a hug, or a pat on the back are simple gestures that not even money can buy.  A telephone call can also brighten someone's day and it only takes a few minutes.  A complimentary expression, given from the heart, will help to lift someone's spirit.  It can be something as simple as "I like you!"

As a former kindergarten teacher I witnessed many acts of kindness given by children.  A child giving a hug to someone who was feeling sad; children offering to share their snack with someone who had forgotten theirs; or children anxious to give a helping hand to someone who had fallen down.  Our little ones are eager to spread joy.  Let's all work towards finding ways to foster the joy of giving.

  2. Thanks Onna!

I checked out your site and it's wonderful! I'd like to see how we can work together. At the least, I'd love to link to some of your activities for toddlers.
