Let Kids Make Their Own Lunch

I have a friend who said he ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every day for lunch when he was in elementary school. To me that sounds terribly boring, but if he liked it and ate it, then great! It suited him.
It makes sense to fix the kids something they actually like and that they will actually eat. As a teacher I've seen some beautifully prepared meals tossed in the trash. Ever wonder why your kids are so famished when they get home? Ask them exactly what they ate of their lunch. You might be surprised.
- Engage them in writing their own menus.
- Discuss the nutritional value of their choices, and set some guidelines.
- Let them make the shopping list.
- Take them to the market with you to choose the food.
- Help them make the lunch the night before.
- Cut the sandwiches into interesting shapes.
- Trim crust and roll the sandwiches for a change.
- After school inquire as to how they liked the lunch and how much of it they ate. There should be a commitment on the child's part to eat what he takes.
Good luck in this new school year. Lunch should be a time of relaxation and nourishment. (A note of support from Mom or Dad is a nice surprise once in a while too.)
