Little Kids wearing political T shirts . . . What do you think?
By The Schoolmarm • Sep 17th, 2008 • Category: educationalDoes your little guy wear a T shirt emblazoned with a message such as "My parents are raising me RIGHT"?
Or does he sport one saying, "My Mama's for Obama"?
If so, then obviously you are on the side of it being okay for children to wear political slogans.
Some people see it differently and express the feeling that it is not appropriate, saying parents are using their kids as billboards for their own beliefs.
Maybe they would go for the more neutral slogans, such as "I'm too young to vote. . . what's your excuse?"
Jennifer Weiss of www.babypolitico.com is all for teaching/involving kids when they are young. You can check her out if your are interested, and likewise inclined.
"Nick News" on Nickelodeon, is showing a yearlong series called "Kids Pick the President." Linda Ellerbee, the host, is quoted in the LATimes, ". . . kids do have an interest in their world, and, of course, politics is part of their world."
Nickelodeon will have a mock election and on Oct. 12, the kids' pick for president will be announced.
Ellerbee stated, "What we are hoping is that by getting kids in the habit of getting involved and voting early that they will not drop that habit when they turn 18. Citizenship does not begin at 18 in this country; it begins when you are born."
What are your feelings on the matter?
- Should we dress them in slogans to push our own political views?
- At what age should kids be encouraged to think seriously about the choice of our nation's leaders?
