Mother's Day from a Mom
By The Schoolmarm • May 1st, 2008 • Category: articlesIs it possible to over estimate the influence of a mother on her child? I doubt it. Sad to say, but not all mothers deserve the sweet words written on a Hallmark card. I am one of the lucky ones, because my mother deserves more than even Hallmark can say. I hope as a mom, that I deserve the wonderful words written on the cards my son gives to me.
“Thank you Mama, for giving me life.” That’s what I say to my mother every year on my birthday.
On my son’s birthday, I call him at his birth moment, 10:16 am, and tell him how much I love him.
The little saying I have quoted to both my mother and my son is: ”Loved you then, love you still, always have, always will.”
As I look at this day set aside to honor mothers, I am aware that it addresses me in a dual role: I am a child who still needs her mother, and I am a woman who has a child of her own, who needs me.
I feel blessed beyond measure to know the love of both. I hope you are able to say the same thing about your life.
If not, then you have an additional challenge: to forgive and let go. Forgiveness is a gift to yourself and it might be the most important gift you'll ever give or receive, on Mother's Day. Don't overthink it, just decide, 'this is the day I let go of the pain of the past.'
With you in mind,
