Children are likely to react negatively to constant reminders. “Brush your teeth before you go to bed.” If this is a nightly routine, and the importance of brushing their teeth has been made clear, then children should be given the chance to automatically complete the task. Reminding them every night to brush their teeth is insulting.

This kind of overparenting can lead to negative results including overly anxious kids.

Constant reminders to children are insulting, because it gives them the feeling they are incapable and need continued guidance in order to complete regular and habitual tasks. Continually pointing out your concerns may cause children to become less responsible and develop low self-esteem.

Our goal as parents is to foster self-esteem and to help our children become independent and competent thinkers. Therefore, we we need to relax and let our kids learn from experience. Instead of issuing constant reminders give them a chance to succeed, and then offer an abundance of praise when success is accomplished.
