Pets and Kids
By The Schoolmarm • Jan 25th, 2010 • Category: parentingSkippy was my first animal friend. He was an unattractive, irritable, short-haired mongrel, a misfit by anyone's measure. His story is for another time. I mention him only to say that he introduced me to the unconditional love that an animal can give.
Today I share my space and my heart with a four year old black and white Cockapoo named Ralphie. He has added much to my life. BUT. . .
Pet ownership should not be assumed uninformed or casually. As much as I love the little guy, he is a serious responsibility. Before you add any animal to your home, consider these things:
- Will there be adequate supervision during the day? (doggie doors are great if you have gated property). Indoor gates (child gates) may be necessary to restrict him to certain areas of the home in your absence. Automatic water and feeders are available.
- Noise: Collars are available to humanely restrict barking, especially in close housing.
- Expense: vet, food, injuries
- Time: regular appointments to the vet for shots, exams, etc.
- Grooming: Some animals require special care.
- Breed: Make sure it is an animal who is good with kids. Not all dogs are as sweet as my Ralphie.
So, before you take home that cute little puppy or fluffy kitty, consider it a long term relationship. With the right breed and realistic expectations you should have a wonderful addition to the family.
With a great little friend by my side,
