On a recent visit to my local public library I was impressed with the children's section. What a great place to acquaint little ones with the world of books.

Even though they may have books at home, seeing so many in one place may be a bit overwhelming. Teach them proper behavior and appreciation for the library. You may want to teach them the following:

  • A quiet voice is necessary so other readers won't be disturbed.
  • There is an order to the books on the shelf that helps us find the titles and authors we want to read. Always reshelf the book correctly.
  • Books are handled carefully, never torn, marked in or thrown about.
  • Books are checked out and returned. (We keep books we buy at stores.)

The librarian is usually delighted to assist in finding age appropriate materials for your child. She or he will be happy to inform you about the readings and special programs designed for your child's age group.

Take advantage of this stimulating environment and help create a life-long love of books, reading and learning.
