The Power of Learning Through Music
By The Schoolmarm • May 26th, 2009 • Category: educationalOne of the things that has always amazed me as a teacher is how are little ones can seem to memorize entire songs on the radio, yet had trouble remembering the little things. Here is something I think you may find interesting.
In this video, watch a youngster illustrate the power of learning through music by singing the names of all 50 states in alphabetical order.
To take advantage of this music/memory partnership, I purchased Multiplication Wrap, a hands on activity which set multiplication facts to a rap beat. The kids took to it faster than standard methods and were less resistant to learning their time tables. For some children it was very effective.
That’s Bingzy, a book by Arlene Richards which includes a Sing-Along CD, implements the power of learning through music by using repetitive words. Little ones will enjoy learning and improve their retention of those simpler things.

So funny. Just this morning I was singing to my 2-year-old in the kitchen. I do that often in order to teach her concepts. She loves music and picks up the concepts quickly when I incorporate a tune. When I was done she said, “Nice singing. That’s very special.” Too cute
Anyway, my thought was…singing is so great for kids (for anyone, really). They love it, their little faces light up, the concepts are learned and remembered for years to come. Well done, Bing Note!
Thanks Shara! I still remember those educational chants and rhymes from way back when I was a kid. And I say them often, especially…I before E except after C. I don’t know what I would do without them.
