What parents should know about giving cough and cold medicines to children

  • Cough and cold medicines only treat the symptoms of the common cold such as runny nose, congestion, fever, aches, and irritability. They do not cure the cold. Children get better with time.
  • Over-the-counter cold and cough medicines can be dangerous for young children. Do not use any cough or cold products in children under 2 years of age.
  • Cough and cold medicines have not been proven to be effective for children under age 6. These products come in many different strengths. Too much medicine can have serious side effects.
  • Find out more information about cold medicines for children from the Food and Drug Administration.

    Thanks for your blog on medicine. It was short and to the point. I'm sure it will make more parents think before administering over the counter medicine. I like the picture of the little girl.
